The Economic Development of Florida: Corporate Welfare or Job Incentives?

Governor Scott has called for lawmakers to back his $85 million request for business-recruitment incentives at Enterprise Florida to continue to attract headquarters and businesses to Florida.  House Speaker Richard Corcoran, a Land O’ Lakes Republican has likened business incentives to “corporate welfare.” A bill is being proposed that seeks to abolish both Visit Florida and Enterprise Florida.  The conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity Florida  called the proposed House bill “bold steps to eliminating corporate welfare to level the playing field for Sunshine State taxpayers.”

Can Florida and its cities compete without offering companies job incentives to relocate here or is this just another government slush fund?
